Perovskite Solar Cells: the Future Engine of New Energy Vehicles

PUdaily | Updated: November 13, 2023

Recently, the Hefei lnstitutes of Physical Science,Chinese Academy of Sciences announced that Pan Xu and Tian Xingyou, two researchers from its Institute of Solid State, together with Professor Nam-Gyu Park from Sungkyunkwan University in South Korea and Professor Dai Songyuan from North China Electric Power University, had made an important breakthrough in the research of trans-perovskite solar cells. The research findings show that the poor performance of perovskite solar cells is a result of the uneven distribution of perovskite cation gradient in the out-of-plane direction. Accordingly, the research team added 1-(Phenylsulfonyl)Pyrrole (PSP) as an additive to homogenize phase distribution of the perovskite films and achieve a photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE) of 26.1%.

As one of the third-generation solar cells, perovskite solar cells, which have been widely used in new energy vehicles and photovoltaic power generation, display the advantages of high efficiency, low costs and easy preparation. Today, many companies are foraying into the perovskite solar cells industry, represented by BYD. Recently, the NEV manufacturer announced that it would increase investment in R&D of solar cell technologies and establish a research institute for photovoltaic technologies to further increase photoelectric conversion efficiency. Enecoat Technologies, a Japanese startup sponsored by Kyoto University, and Toyota announced that they would work together to develop perovskite photovoltaic cells, a preferred next-generation photovoltaic cell, and apply this technology to the roofs of all-electric cars and other parts by 2030.

It is expected that perovskite solar cells will capture an even bigger market share in the future as technology advances and costs decrease.
