Dubai, UAE – Pearl Polyurethane Systems has started to implement price increases across its 141b-based systems. The move is in response to the imminent supply shutdown of the blowing agent from the last remaining sources in China.
The Montreal Protocol on substances that deplete the ozone layer anticipates a total phase-out of the blowing agent in the UAE by 2030. China, however, issued a national plan in July 2025 that mandates a gradual reduction of HCFCs, with cuts of 67.5% in production and 73.2% in consumption by the end of 2025 from baseline levels, and by 97.5% by 2030. Production of HCFC-141b for controlled uses is to be banned from 1 January 2026.
China's restrictions include a ban from 2026 on household refrigerator and freezer production using HFCs. There will also be a ban from 2029 on the use of refrigerants with GWP greater than 750 in new room air conditioners and small commercial systems.
In a statement, Pearl said it is “fully geared toward guiding its customers in choosing the best alternative, ensuring superior product characteristics as well as economics”.
