Asahi Kasei, one of Japan’s leading chemical manufacturers, announced on December 5 that it will cease production of hexamethylenediamine (HMD) as part of its ongoing business structure optimization plan. The initiative aims to enhance capital efficiency and strengthen the company’s long-term profitability.
HMD is a key raw material used in the production of nylon 66, hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI), and various resin curing agents. According to Asahi Kasei, the decision to exit the HMD business was made after a comprehensive assessment of market conditions, competitiveness, and future capital requirements.
The shutdown is scheduled to be completed by April 2027. The company stated that the decision will not affect operations at its PA66 resin and fiber plant in Nobeoka, Miyazaki Prefecture, nor its HDI and derivatives production facilities in Hyuga, Japan. All affected employees will be reassigned to other positions within the company.
Guided by its Medium-term Management Plan 2027, Asahi Kasei is prioritizing the improvement of capital productivity and investment returns while concentrating resources on its core growth areas—pharmaceuticals, critical care, housing, and electronics.
Throughout the year, Asahi Kasei has announced a series of restructuring measures, including the withdrawal from MMA monomer, CHMA, acrylic resin, and SB latex businesses, the restructuring of its acetonitrile supply chain (including the closure of the Kawasaki refining plant), the divestment of lead-acid battery separator manufacturer Daramic, and the expansion of production for Pimel photosensitive polyimide.
