2.1.4 Asian TDI Facility Dynamics

  • Shanghai BASF Polyurethane has announced plan to expand its TDI plant in Caojing, Shanghai early this month with capacity added to 220 kt per annual from current 160 kt. The plan, which is under Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) stage, will be carried based on current facilities and realized through reconstruction at the production line without new line needed to be built.

  • Fujian Southeast Electrochem is now producing qualified toluene diisocyanate (TDI) now at its 50 kt plant, according to the company. Products are under package now and cargoes have yet to come to the market. The company’s the other 50 kt plant is off-line now and it is uncertain when it will start trial run.

  • South Korea KPX Chemical restarted one of its three 50 kt TDI plants at the end of Dec. following completion of annual maintenance and it runs with full loads, according to a company source, despite high costs and weak demand for the moment. The producer now supplies 40% of outputs to domestic users and exports the remaining parts.

  • The new toluene diisocyanate (TDI) plant of Gujarat Narmada Valley Fertilizer Company Limited (GNFC) with a capacity of 50 kt located in Rahiad village near Dahej has been issued a closure order by the industrial safety department of Gujarat government after an incident of leakage of phosgene gas from the plant on Jan. 9 night that left over 15 employees ill.

3. Downstream Industries

3.1 Upholstered Furniture 

According to relevant statistics, China produced 4159800 pieces of upholstered furniture (including mattress and sofa) in December, down by 4.37% compared with last month. The overall outputs from January to December were about 42,390,000 pieces.
The Ministry of Commerce, Development Division, Circulation and China Building Materials Circulation Association jointly issued December BHI (National Home Building Materials Sentiment Index) 101.86, a slip of 12.45 points month-on-month but down 4.62 points year-on-year.
In Dec., eastern and southern regions were still the top two locations by outputs with shares of 53.91% and 30.36% respectively, declining by 1.19 percentage points and increasing by 1.52 percentage points over Nov., accounting for more than 80% of total outputs in this month.
